Third Sunday after Pentecost

Rebellious generations reject the prophets! Why do these servants of the Lord not simply languish and give up? God’s whisper repeatedly urges Elijah to continue prophesying. Jesus, the ultimate Prophet, tirelessly strives to prophesy divine judgement, justice, and grace. He dares not camouflage the cost of true discipleship. Rejection is sure to season the life of faithful people. Yet we have an encourager. The Holy Spirit curbs the behaviors of our flesh and enables us to persevere with His good gifts.

Meditation:

Luke chapter 10 reveals the details during the middle of Jesus’ public ministry.  In Luke’s previous chapter, Jesus warned His followers about the cost of following Him.  In this week’s text Jesus sends His people to deliver the message that would change the world.  This isn’t yet the message of the Great Commission, “Go and make disciples of all nations….”.  Nonetheless, the Savior sends out the “72” like lambs among the wolves.  In the midst of an angry and hostile world, Jesus sends workers into the plentiful harvest fields with His protection and promise of peace for those who listened to their message.  Listening to their message meant that they were receiving Jesus and those receiving  to Jesus meant they were listening to the Father.  Jesus sends us out in this day and age in order to proclaim His peace that passes all understanding.
