Living Water

Third Sunday in Lent

March 8, 2026 8:00 am

Scripture

John 4:5-26

Meditation

Before we had modern plumbing, many old farmhouses depended on hauling water from a hand pump or nearby well. Imagine what it must have been like the day when running water was finally piped into those homes! After years of carrying heavy buckets, you could just turn on the faucet and get clear water flowing instantly. Long walks and exhausting labor were no longer necessary to get life-giving water right where it’s needed. In John 4, when Jesus meets the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s Well, we see Jesus keeping a divine appointment at just the right time. As she comes to draw water in the heat of the day, Jesus speaks about “living water.” At first she thinks He means a better source of physical water, such as something that would spare her the daily trip to the well. But the living water that Jesus is pointing to is much deeper. It is the spiritual life and renewal that comes from God. The Living Water from the hands of our Savior brings salvation to sinful people. The gift of the “water” that Jesus offers isn’t limited by our background, status, or past mistakes. Like the new pipes bringing water into an old house, His grace flows into places that once felt dry or worn out. Where people struggle to satisfy their deepest thirst on their own, Jesus promises a spring of living water within them. Jesus is an Ongoing Source of hope, forgiveness, and New Life that never runs dry.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, You are the Living Water. We often try to meet our needs through our own effort. Our hearts grow tired and thirsty as we search for peace, purpose, and forgiveness. Thank You for Your promise to deliver something much greater: living water that flows freely and never runs dry. May Your love refresh our souls and overflow into the lives of others, so that those around us may also come to know the life that You died to bring. Amen.
