Meditation
Epiphany means “appearing” or “revealing”, and so it makes sense that during the Season of Epiphany, we celebrate the Gift of Light that has been revealed to the world. As the Wise Men looked at the night sky, they saw a light they’d never seen before. It was a light that they couldn’t ignore, and so they gathered their things and packed their gifts. They didn’t know how long they would be gone or where the light would lead them, but they had to find out for themselves. We’re told that they had only one thing on their mind…“We have seen a star in the east and we have come to worship Him.” (Matthew 2:2)
As part of their worship, they presented Jesus and His family with gifts fit for a king. “Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh.” (Matthew 2:11). Gold, a royal gift, signified Jesus was the King who would sit on the throne of His father David. The gift of Frankincense denoted His future priesthood, where He intercedes on our behalf. And the gift of myrrh was used in the making of perfume, anointing oil, medicine, and is also needed in the embalming process. All of these gifts shed light on the days that were sure to come for the Light of the world.
May the Light of Christ shine in your hearts and minds this Epiphany Season. “God is light; in Him there is no darkness at all.” (1 John 1:5)
Prayer
Dearest Jesus, You are the Light that shines through the darkness. We are born in the darkness of sin, and we need Your Light. Forgive us for trying to find our own way as we fall into temptation. Shine the Light of Your grace on us and give us courage to stand in the Light of Your Truth. Amen.
